On December 9, the LuHi Girls Varsity Basketball team (ranked No. 5) embarked on an unforgettable journey to the 40th Annual 'Iolani Classic, a prestigious event that has gained national recognition over the years. The tournament, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, marked a significant milestone for the Crusaders, who were eager to continue to showcase their talent on the national stage.

Before their first match up, the team settled in with two practice sessions on the mainland, giving them the opportunity to prepare for the competition ahead. The girls also had a chance to experience the rich culture of Hawaii, where they were warmly greeted by the Punahou School team. Members of Punahou welcomed the Crusaders with local chocolates and shared in pregame Hawaiian rituals, setting the stage for a memorable tournament experience.

First Round Win

The girls wasted no time in asserting their dominance in the opening game. Facing the local team, Punahou, the LuHi girls put on an impressive display, cruising to a 105-22 victory. Junior Zaniyah Williams led the charge with 25 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals, while Junior prospect Emily McDonald added 16 points and 6 steals to the scoreboard.

A Strong Second Round Performance

In the second round, the Crusaders faced a tough, well-coached Pinewood team from Northern California. Despite a strong challenge, LuHi pulled away with a 77-56 win. Senior Olivia Jones delivered a stellar performance, contributing 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Sophomore Taylor Brown also had a standout game, finishing with 19 points, 8 assists, and 6 steals.

Championship Anticipated Match up

In the championship game, the Crusaders squared off against nationally ranked Etiwanda (CA), a team known for its competitive edge and a highly anticipated match up viewed by many around the country. LuHi wasn't bothered by Etiwanda's senior-led experience. The girls fought hard and secured an 88-79 victory, claiming the Iolani Classic title.

Olivia Jones was named the game MVP after another outstanding performance, scoring 30 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and dishing out 3 assists. Savannah Swords, who was named the tournament MVP, contributed 18 points and 9 rebounds, cementing her place as a key player in the Crusaders' championship run.

A Historic Achievement

With this victory, the LuHi Girls Varsity Basketball team made history. They became the first team—both boys and girls—to bring home the Iolani Classic championship title. The Crusaders' achievement marks a significant achievement not just for the team, but for the entire LuHi community.
