Who Can Participate?
Middle School Interscholastic Sports are offered to students in Grades Seven and Eight. At this time, we do not offer interscholastic competitions for sixth grade, but they do have the option to participate within our developmental In-House Intramural Program. Intramural information is emailed separately through school administration to all sixth graders once the school year begins!

Medical Clearance
All students are required to complete Magnus Health and ensure that all paperwork is complete and up-to-date. In order for Student-Athletes to be considered cleared, the school nurse must have a valid NYS Physical on file (within the past year), up-to-date immunizations, and no flags on the student’s paperwork that would preclude participation in athletics. All paperwork must be submitted and accepted by the respective start date.

APP Process
Middle Schoolers are allowed to try out and play on a Varsity team by completing the Athletic Placement Process (APP). The APP is a State-mandated physical exam to test the level of physical advancement and fitness for a Middle School student interested in playing on the High School level. Please note the following requirements for any Middle School student-athlete who is interested in competing on the Varsity level.

Any students interested in athletics should obtain the following:
  • Parent/Guardian Permission
  • Athletic Director Approval
  • Medical Clearance from a Physician
  • Sport/Skill Evaluation
  • Physical Fitness Training
  • Qualification Determination
  • Try-outs
  • NYSAIS Notification
*The three, bolded items should be completed prior to completing the rest of the process.

The APP process states that the test is designed for “students with the appropriate physical and emotional readiness and whose athletic abilities are outside of those of their age-related peers.” If any Middle School student-athlete is interested in completing this process to play on a High School team, they must receive a letter of recommendation from a Coach or a Trainer and send it to the Athletic Director at melanie.logan@luhi.org.
