Denis Scannell is the Head Coach of the Girl's Varsity Lacrosse team at LuHi, where he has led the team to back-to-back conference championships in 2022 and 2023. His leadership was recognized in 2023 when he was named PSAA Coach of the Year. Scannell took over a team that finished 0-11 in 2021 and guided them to a conference title in 2022, improving their win total by an incredible 800%. Under his guidance, the team has seen individual success as well, with a Conference MVP, two Conference Tournament MVPs, and seven All-Conference selections.
Before taking the helm of the Girl's Varsity Lacrosse team, Coach Scannell served as an assistant coach for the Boy’s Varsity team at LuHi. He also held the position of Associate Head Lacrosse Coach at Suffolk Community College, where he focused on directing the offense, strength and conditioning, and leadership development.
Coach Scannell is a graduate of Stony Brook University, where he was a 4-year starter at midfield, a 3-year captain, and a 1st Team All-America East selection. He was also named Team MVP in 2000 and 2002 and played a key role in leading the Seawolves to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002. Scannell was honored by the SBU Lacrosse alumni board with a spot on the Stony Brook 1st Team All-Decade midfield, alongside professional box and field lacrosse players Kevin Crowley and Ryan Duchs.
Scannell began his coaching career as a JV assistant at MacArthur High School in 2003. He coached the Varsity Lacrosse team at LuHi from 2004-2007 and later coached the LuHi Middle School team from 2011-2014. He returned as the Head Coach of the LuHi Varsity Lacrosse team in 2017 and led them to a conference title.
In addition to his coaching career, Coach Scannell has worked as a teacher and administrator at LuHi for the past 19 years. He holds a Master of Education Degree in Athlete Development and Coaching Education from Xavier University.
